Garuda

Then Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu, was summoned by Hanuman, who told him of Rama’s plight and requested him to go and rescue Rama and Lakshman from the Nagpash. As the food of Garuda is snakes, he quickly flew to the battlefield and devoured that noose, made up of nagas (snakes). Shri Rama heartily thanked Garuda for his assistance.

Suicide

Hanuman’s first search for Sita ends in failure. The Sanskrit epic depicts him in a crestfallen mood on the island, reflecting on what to do next. Hanuman, disheartened by failure, is now standing on the shore of the ocean and reasons that perhaps it is best for him to commit suicide. He thinks as follows: if I go back without locating Sita and tell Rama that I have not succeeded in finding her, he will die from the shock. If he dies, Lakshmana will die from the shock of Rama’s death. With Rama and Lakshmana dead, his own master, Sugriva, will die from the shock of their deaths. And if all of them die in this way then I will die from the shock of the death of my master. So perhaps it is best to abbreviate the whole process and commit suicide right now.

While he was contemplating suicide, his attention was diverted by the activity of a small bird, which seemed to dive from the sky, collect the water of the ocean in her beak, and fly away. The frequent repetition of this act by the little bird aroused his curiosity and he asked the bird what it was up to. The bird replied: “My nest has fallen into the ocean and I am trying to dry up the ocean to recover it.” Hanuman was taken aback by the resolve of the little bird, and asked, full of surprise, how she hoped to empty the ocean to recover her nest (in the face of the obvious mismatch between her and the ocean). Thereupon the bird replied:

Days and nights are long;

My beak is strong as iron.

Indefatigability is the root of success.

Why will the ocean not dry up?

Hanuman was astounded by the determination of the little bird and thought to himself: if this little bird can display such courage and determination then surely I should not give up on my goal and at least make one more attempt to find Sita.

Hanuman did, indeed, succeed in his mission the second time. The little verse uttered by the little bird in the epic which so inspired Hanuman has become a famous saying and its message – “Give up giving up” – has perhaps inspired many more, just as it inspired Hanuman.

Deity of Anjani Mata Birth

There are multiple places in India are claimed as the birthplace of Lord Hanuman

1) According to one theory, Hanuman was born on Anjaneya Hill, in Hampi, Karnataka. This is located near the Risyamukha mountain on the banks of the Pampa, where Monkey King Sugreeva and Lord Rama are said to have met in Ramayana Legend.

2) Anjan, a small village about 18 km away from Gumla, Bihar , houses ANJAN DHAM , which is said to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. The name of the village is derived from the name of the goddess Maa Anjani, the mother of Hanuman. Aanjani Cave, 4 km from the village, is believed to be the place where Mata Aanjani once lived. Many objects and items of archaeological importance obtained from this site are now held at the Patna Museum.

3) The Anjaneri (or Anjneri) mountain, located 8 km from Trimbakeshwar in the Nasik district, is also claimed as the birthplace of Hanuman. One has trek around 6 kms up from the base of the trek to reach the birth place.

4) A cave in a hill near Gokarna, one of the oldest temple towns of India, is also said to be the birthplace of Hanuman. This cave has had a Hanuman temple for a long time. Gokarna, situated in west coast of Karnataka, is known for Atma Linga of Shiva, installed by Ganapathi to save it from the hands of Ravana long before Ramayana days.

Ganga

Narada and Tumburu are the two celestial musicians of the Devaloka. Their rivalry over mastery of music leads them to Lord Shiva. Shiva directs them to Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu points out to them that Hanuman is the better of them. They decide to try him out and prove their mastery.

At the appointed time, Bramha, Vishnu, Shiva, Narada, Tumburu and Hanuman gather.

To make the test interesting, Shiva freezes everyone in ice till their abdomen, with only their head and limbs movable.

The test is to melt the ice with your music and free yourself.

Both Narada and Tumburu fail, and Hanuman succeeds in thawing himself out.

After accepting his greatness, both Narada and Tumburu request Hanuman to free them too.

Upon their request, Hanuman sings and the soulful and celestial music melts the ice and both Narada and Tumburu are free.

But Hanuman is now in a different universe and continues to sing. The song is so powerful that Vishnu enters trance, and a part of his aura melts and trickles down to the feet.

Bramha promptly collects and stores the aura in his kamandala.

This aura of Vishnu melted by the divine and mellifluous song of devotee Hanuman, now collected by Bramha is Ganga.

Descent from heavens.

I’m cutting short the long story of Bhagirath’s ancestors’ cursed souls.

Pleased by Bhagirath’s penance to bring peace to his ancestors’ souls, Ganga agreed to descend from the heavens.

But the force for her descent would crush the earth and lead to devastating catastrophe. To prevent the same, Bhagirath started penance unto Shiva. Shiva is pleased with the penance and agrees to arrest Ganga’s descent of destruction.

When at the opportune moment Bramha releases Ganga from the heavens to the earth, Shiva is ready with his locks open to contain Ganga’s destructive dance.

In her arrogance, Ganga swelled up to cause maximum destruction but Shiva caught her in his locks and imprisoned her, to teach her a lesson.

Bhagirath was distraught and did penance unto Shiva a second time. Shiva softened and released Ganga, falling on the ground and flowing into 7 streams. 3 to the east, 3 to the west and one followed Bhagirath, who led the waters over his ancestors’ ashes and their souls were redeemed.

This having completed the incomparable task, Bhagirath brought Ganga to earth.

Bramha ordained that Ganga would also be known as Bhagirathi.

For the symbolism part, let’s look closer.

Ganga (Knowledge) flows from Shiva (God) to man (consciousness) to free the cursed souls (mind)

Knowledge has the power to enrich or crush you. Only the enlightened ones (Bhagirath) with their penance can bring the knowledge to the masses.
