Hanuman Ashtak


Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak, also known as Hanuman Aashtak, is a devotional Hindi Bhajan song dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Sankatmochan Hanuman Ashtakam (Sankat Mochan Naam Tiharo) was written By Tulsidas, a great devotee of Hanumanji. Ashtak, or Astakam, literally means eight and the prayer contain eight verses in praise of Lord Hanuman and the bhajan ends with a Doha. In most Lord Hanumanji Temples, this Sankatmochan Hanumanastak is chanted after the Hanuman Chalisa (Forty chaupais on Hanuman)

Baal samaya ravi bhakshi liyo tab Teenahun loka bhayo andhiyaaro
Taahi saun traas bhayo jag ko Yeh sankat kaahu saun jaat na taaro
Devan aani kari binati tab Chhaandi diyo ravi kashta nivaaro

English Meaning:
When a child, you lapped up the sun, And darkness on the triple world fell,
The world thus got into trouble, A crisis as such none could dispel.
The gods then prayed to you, Sparing the sun, you eased their woe,
Your title as the Danger Dispeller O Kapi, Who in the world doesn’t know ? (1)

Scared of Bali, Sugriv dwelt on the hill, Sent you to the Great Lord and return did await,The startled sage’s curse then, And what advice he needed you did deliberate;
Guised as a brahmin, you fetched the Great Lord, Thus you relieved the devotee of sorrow,Your title as the Danger Dispeller O Kapi, Who in the world doesn’t know ? (2)

Jeevat na bachihaun ham saun ju Binaa sudhi laaye ihaan pagu dhaaro

English Meaning:
Alongwith Angad you went to fetch Sita, “Find her”, the ape king did declare,
“None of you I’ll spare, “Without her trace if you set in foot here!”
On the seaside when all were sick and tired, you found out Sita and saved their lives thus and so;Your title as the Danger Dispeller O Kapi, Who in the world doesn’t know ? (3)

When Ravan struck fear into Sita, And asked all demonesses to ease his sorrow,
Then O Hanuman, Lord the Great, You reached there,And to the huge demons, dealt a death blow; When Sita sought fire from the Ashok tree,Giving her the Lord’s ring, you eased her woe;Your title as the Danger Dispeller O Kapi, Who in the world doesn’t know ? (4)

When an arrow struck Lakshman’s chest, A deathly one that Ravan’s son did shoot,

When Ravan carried on foolish war, And serpent noose over heads of all did throw;
